I’ve seen this before but have never found the source or reason why. My assumption is there is some local ordinance that doesn’t allow street facing garage doors or something like that.

Ok, but FIX YOUR REVERSE LIGHT.

In Finland it’s currently not ok to build a garag e if you cannot turn around in the yard between the garage and the st reet . Because reversing to the street is ve ry dangerous. S o here that kind of thing might be useful (unless your neighbors might catch you) .

Looks like a Victorian era building (or at least a reproduction of one), could also be a historically protected facade that prevented cutting a garage into it. Certainly a clever solution, hope the neighbors weren't all NIMBY about it.

I do believe there are markets where the mk6 only has 1 reverse light.

Until I saw the link I didn't even realize there was another car above.

That’s bizarre. Certainly the lamp cover is there, pretty odd way to save a buck.

Yea, that was my thinking. That it might be in a historical district or something which lead to garages not being allowed to face the street.

Some areas have historical building codes that the exterior can’t be altered. There were a couple stories of some elaborate ones in SF.

Looks like a Euro spec car. Those generally only have one reverse light, and the other side will replace the reverse light with a  rear facing fog light that is required in Europe.

Redundancy is good.

It only has one! I think. In some places you’re allowed to have a rear fog light in the driver’s side and a reversing light in the other. That’s in NZ so you’d have the rear fog on  the right and reversing on the left. My car is the same.

It's in NZ but they follow EU regs.

That, and the local government can get touchy about adding curb cuts in urban areas, since it permanently removes a street parking spot. You can argue that you’re only r emoving the spot you yourself would otherwise use, but if it's useable to other drivers when you're not there, that can be a tough sell sometimes.

Depending on the density of the area, that ‘driveway’ would be blocked by a parked car most of the time.

I have an example. One of the houses we looked at buying, had a 1-car attached garage. Zoning ordinances in my town would have prevented me from expanding that garage, but there was room to build a detached 2 -car garage. Another regulation in my town, is that you cannot have two garages on one residential property, so I was considering putting a door like this on the original garage and pretending I had converted it into living space. That would have been for my wife’s car, then the new garage would have been all mine.

I decided that was too much work, and bought a different house.

I am just imagining someone connecting their second garage with a long breezeway and arguing that since they are connected they are in fact one garage.

In the case of this place, that wouldn't have helped. Detached garages are allowed to be much closer to the property line, than attached garages for ... Reasons ... I guess.
